“Fusing Fiction and Reality: element for building stronger brands”

By Claudia Perez February | 2025

Welcome, my dear readers, owners of small and medium-sized businesses, to a new weekly meeting. Today, I invite you to explore some examples of strategic brand partnerships that have contributed to the creation and/or reinforcement of a positive brand image in the perception of customers.

Disney and Airbnb

Disney is one of the most powerful and well-positioned brands in the world, known for carefully selecting its strategic partnerships, always considering the content it creates and ensuring it aligns with its predominantly child and youth audience.

One of Disney’s most famous partnerships was with the lodging platform Airbnb, founded in 2008. This collaboration focused on the production of Disney Pixar: The Magic of Coco, a film that highlights the value of family, childhood decision-making, and the richness of Mexican culture, specifically the heritage of Día de los Muertos.

Disney successfully integrated its narrative with Airbnb’s mission: “To create a world where people can feel like they belong anywhere they travel, connecting with local cultures and living unique experiences”

Just as Coco embarks on a journey to the world of the Dead in the movie, Airbnb invites its guests to immerse themselves in local culture, transforming each stay into a unique and unforgettable experience.

Why is this an excellent example of brand partnership?

  1. Thematic coherence: The partnership is well thought out logically structured. The thematic elements intertwine, creating a seamless synergy in the message projected.
  2. Brand identity: The partnership aligns with the mission of both companies and reinforces their brand identity, allowing for a deeper and broader connection with the audience while differentiating itself from the competition.
  3. For Disney, it is an opportunity to expand its reach beyond theme parks, fil productions and characters, offering immersive brand experiences.
  4. For Airbnb, it means leveraging Disney’s magical storytelling to build innovative, unique and exclusive experiences, fostering a deeper emotional connection with its target audience.

After all, my dear readers, who wouldn’t love stay in a princess castle? Or in the magical town of Arendelle from Frozen? I’m sure it would be trending on Instagram!

Lego and Nintendo

Continuing with our child and youth-oriented theme, I present to you, my dear readers, another successful partnership launched in 2020: LEGO and Nintendo. Since then, both companies have worked together to create LEGO sets inspired by the worlds and fictional characters of Super Mario, Luigi and Peach.

These sets not only allow for traditional LEGO building but also incorporate sensors that react to stimuli, recreating a video game in a LEGO universe within a real physical space, moving away from Nintendo’s strictly digital dimension.

This collaboration extends beyond the child and youth market, as it also includes the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), a LEGO-style recreation of the classic Nintendo console, designed specifically for adults and collectors.

Why is this an excellent example of brad partnership?

  1. Greater Market reach and visibility: These partnerships allow both brands to expand their reach and visibility in the market.
  2. For LEGO, it represents an opportunity to connect with Nintendo’s broad audience, which goes beyond traditional children and youth segments, reaching adults driven by nostalgia.
  3. Strengthening a positive brand image: For Nintendo, this partnership provides the perfect platform to expand its brand and characters while distancing itself from the controversies surrounding the video game industry.

It’s no secret that the gaming industry is often criticized for its sometimes violent content, the sedentary lifestyle it promotes among children and young people, and its perceived lack of creativity stimulation.

This partnership with LEGO helps counteract that image, as LEGO is widely recognized for enhancing cognitive development, problem-solving skills and creative engineering in young minds.

Conclusion (Pro+Fusions)

These partnerships go beyond simply increasing reach and visibility. They are what I like to call “Pro+Fusions”- strategic collaborations that aren’t just about expanding market share but about creating unique experiences, merging the physical space with the fictional universe.

This approach enables brands to establish deeper and more immersive emotional connections with their audience, ultimately achieving the resonance and loyalty that every brand aspires to build.

Creativity Exercise: As today’s post comes to an end, I propose a final thought for my dear readers, owners of small and medium-sized businesses.

If you could partner with any brand, which one would it be and why? What would be the foundation and reasoning behind that partnership?

As I Always say, I won’t say goodbye, but rather, see you next week!
